Using the Whyte classification system, this is a 4-4-0 locomotive of the Camelback type. 4-4-0s were called "Americans" since it was a very common early locomotive wheel arrangement in the U.S. Camelback locomotives were designed to burn anthracite coal, needing a wide firebox, neccessitating the mounting of the cab in the middle of the boiler. The D.S.&S. became part of the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
